Also known as "The Festival of Lights".It is held on the full moon of the twelfth lunar month. (mid to late November)"Loy" means "to float" "Krathong" is the name of the 'boat' traditionally made of banana leaf with flowers, incense and candles in it.

Most Thai people will trim hair and nails on Loy Krathong day and place the trimmings in the Krathong as well, then light the incense and candles and float their Krathong down the river to take away their bad thoughts and feelings, grudges, anger etc.

Chiang Mai Travel Guide:

Chiang Mai Picture In 1984, just outside the modern Chiang Mai metropolitan area, archaeologists uncovered the remains of an ancient city. Research concluded that this was the city of Wiang Khum Kham, one of many fortified cities built by King Mengrai as he consolidated his hold on the north. In fact, it appears that Mengrai may have lived at Wiang Khum Kham for a few years while Chiang Mai was constructed. Although most of the sites are not much more than platforms and ruined chedis, there are two working temples in the area that date from the city's heyday at the end of the 13th century. Wat Kham Tom and Wat Chedi Laim, where in fact the spirit of King Mengrai is said to still reside. Every time I go there my hair stands on end and I get goose-bumps. This happened the first time I visited... BEFORE I heard of the legend of the presence of the spirit of King Mengrai.
